Think Superman or Clark Kent on TV and chances are Dean Cain's name will spring to mind. He's had a pretty eventful and to a great extent a charmed life. He's been blessed with talent, good looks and he's got what it takes to be a star with a huge fan following.
Dean Cain wasn't born Dean Cain. His real name was Dean George Tanaka. His parents are Sharon Thomas, an actress and Roger Tanaka, who was with the US army. The name Tanaka is Japanese - his real father was half Japanese. However, the parents went their own different ways and Dean's mother married a Hollywood director, Christopher Cain who adopted Dean and his brother and later had a girl who is Dean's half sister.
Cain was always a sportsman and right through school, it looked like he would have his name up in lights with a sporty career. After Princeton and a degree in history, he did was everyone expected him to do – he signed up with a football team. Then came a training camp injury to his knee and suddenly, all his football dreams had to be replaced with a future so different. So began his foray into the celluloid world, considering his father, Christopher Cain was already a part of it, which made the entry easier.
He's a familiar face in a number of popular TV shows. His most famous role is of course, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He was also the face in Ripley's Believe it or Not. Then there have been numerous television commercials and other TV shows as well, including Beverly Hills 90210, A Different World, Grapevine, Las Vegas, Out of Time. He's also been involved in screenwriting and directing.
Dean Cain's personal life too is very much in the public eye. An actor like him who is the public eye is bound to be written about.
