Football Could Have Gained A Hero
Growing up in California for Dean was a sporty life. He attended Santa Monica High School and right through, he shone where sports was concerned. Was it any wonder that he was offered 17 – yes, 17 sports scholarships when he graduated from school? Take a look at Dean Cain and you won't have any trouble believing it. He's so athletic looking, it isn't funny.
Well, Dean turned them all down – all those wonderful athletic sports scholarships. Now why would anyone who loved sports do that? Probably because he felt there was a lot more to education than sports. So he went to one of the premier institutions in the country – Princeton – and read history there. Not that he turned his back on sports though. There was no way he could do that – he was just too sporty! So he went on to play volleyball and to captain the team. What he also excelled in was his first love, football. He was the Defensive Back and besides the most interceptions in the game in a single season, he also set the record for the most interceptions in a career.
Dean went on to graduate from Princeton having majored in history and he followed his heart to football. It was to an NFL football team, Buffalo Bills that he headed. He joined them as a free agent and attended a football camp. It was here that he unfortunately sustained a knee injury. For Dean, it seemed to be a goodbye to all his dreams and hopes. The injury, while it let him lead a fairly normal life, put paid to his ever playing not just football but most sports again. Any sport could have made things much worse. He was told by doctors that if he wanted to lead a normal active life and kick a football with his kids, he would need to leave the sporting world forever. So Dean had his choice made for him. His heart might have called him to a different career but circumstances led his feet down another path.
Was this ordained by fate? Whatever the reason, Dean moved on to the world he knew next best – the movies. So maybe it was the second choice career at that point of time but what it gave the world was Dean Cain the actor. He entered, he saw, he messed around a bit and he conquered the hearts of viewers and fans all over the world. Football's loss really turned out to be the celluloid world's gain!
